Common Ringtail Possum

Pseudocheirus peregrinus

Description:

RIP Possum What kind of Possum is this? About 50cm without tail, long nose, small "hands", golden coloured, big ears, bold patch on inside of its tail.

Habitat:

Near main road and jungle stretch. At a stretch of road with lots of warning signs - Tree Kangaroo's Crossing - this little one was at the side of the road. I guess he did not make the cross over. What a gorgeous little creature. Look at those hands!

Notes:

We stopped to look at this creature at the side of the road, maybe it was still alive and we could bring it somewhere. It was dead unfortunately but really completely in one piece. Must have had an internal bleeding and I don't think it happened a long time before we drove by. Poor thing. We moved it into the grassy ditch so it would be "in peace" OHHH I just realise it was a marsupial! We did not think about checking the pouch! Is there anyone who can tell me if this was a boy or a girl and set my mind at ease?

Thank you Barbara and Neil. I don't think there was a joey as there was no movement and I guess I would have noticed when moving the adult. I checked your posting Neil. Awesome!

It's sad that there are so many possums killed on the roads. I see so many in Brisbane, the majority of which seem to be ringtails. I hope there wasn't a joey in the pouch, but from the photos I can't tell the difference between male and female. Well done on taking the time to stop and for caring :-) Here's a little ringie I found a week ago: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/209...

Hard to tell its sex but if it had a baby in a pouch you would have possibly noticed movement.
