Red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii)
Protected marshland.
This shell of a red swamp crayfish was found on the shore of the Great Marshes (at the Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge). Since it remained in one piece, in an almost perfect condition, it is likely to have died of some natural causes. In VA, it is considered to be an invasive species.
