Great Blue Skimmer

Libellula vibrans

Description:

A total length of 50 to 63 mm, it is one of the largest skimmers. Males become completely pruinose blue, with blue eyes and white faces. Younger males appear similar to females but gradually become blue. Females have white faces and develop blue eyes.

Habitat:

Beside the canal at Bayou Segnette State Park. This park is not far from the urban center of New Orleans, yet it features access to two types of wetlands, swamp and marsh. Saltwater intrusion coming into the canals from the Gulf of Mexico created the marsh. This is a remarkable habitat for plant and wildlife.
