Paradise Tanager

Tangara chilensis

Description:

The Paradise Tanager is a brilliantly multicolored, medium-sized songbird whose length varies between 13.5 and 15 cm. It has a light green head, sky blue underparts and black upper body plumage.

Notes:

This bird was seen and photographed during my morning spent from the observation canopy tower within Yasuni. We were able to find 7 species of Tanager, 3 species of Aracari, 2 species of Toucan, 4 species of Macaw, and many others during this brief morning. But without a doubt, one of the best birds to make its way close to the tower to forage, were these Paradise Tanagers.

That day was the first and only time I have seen paradise tanagers. This particular shot was not the first one I saw. We watched many of them in the tops of the canopy from a great distance. But finally had 3 species of canopy tanagers fly next to the tower about 30 ft from the deck. This is where I captured this and other images.

This bird was found in the Yasuni National Park, abut 40 meters in the air. This photograph was taken above the bird from an observation tower that came out just above the majority of the canopy. To see this bird, an observation tower in the amazon is your best bet :-)

thanks guys! I will try and find the rest of the photos I took of this species to share. They were quite wonderful, but only seen on the Amazon basin, high in the canopy with the Cotingas like the Spangled Cotinga
