Raccoon

Procyon lotor

Description:

Rather large raccoon at another trap cam location outside our garbage cans. Grey with black mask.

Habitat:

Country suburbs of the Sierra Nevada Mountains

Notes:

One of our local raccoons attempting to break into our garbage awhile ago. There's a family living in the bottom of a hollow oak tree down the driveway. Has occasionally raided the chicken pen. Interesting raccoon facts (from Wikipedia): The word "raccoon" was adopted into English from the native Powhatan term, as used in the Virginia Colony. It was recorded on Captain John Smith's list of Powhatan words as "aroughcun", and on that of William Strachey as "arathkone". It has also been identified as a Proto-Algonquian root "ahrah-koon-em", meaning "[the] one who rubs, scrubs and scratches with its hands."
