Bromeliad - with Ants

Description:

These small fist sized Bromeliads were flowering and growing very high in the canopy of the trees. This one had fallen and I carried it to a stump to take a picture. Within a few minutes my fingers were burning and itching and I realized the Bromelidad was full of tiny brown ants about 1.5 mm long. If you look closely at the first picture, you can find some of the ants. Every Bromeliad must contain an individual Ant Nest.

Habitat:

Lacandon Jungle, Yaxchilan Mayan Ruins, Usumacinta River, Chiapas.
