Mountain Apple

Syzygium malaccense

Description:

Unknown flowering tree along the trail that leads above and past Maunawili Falls, Oahu, Hawaii. Any tree experts out there, familiar with flowering trees of Hawaii, please help to identify. I assume it is related to Ohi'a Lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha), but it lacked the abundant leaves and "thick", shrub-like appearance of the Ohi'as I have seen on Oahu.

You're welcome. I love when they drop their flowers and the ground becomes a carpet of pink!

Thanks. I am surprised I missed that one, didn't recognize the tree. I guess I have never seen them with flowers before, if the fruit had been ripe it would have been obvious!

That was my 2500th species ID suggestion. :-)

It would be good to have a view from behind the flowers and a better look at the leaves. If not Metrosideros, I wonder if it is a Syzygium.
