Comatricha fragilis
A small patch of miniature pearls on dark, wiry stems. Maybe 4mm tall. Colour is varying from white through pink to red. Pics 2 & 3 are 4 days later. The number is less, the colour is very much less, and the layout seems different so I'm not sure if they aren't another generation. I will try to find these again tomorrow which will be a 2 day break instead of 4.
These were on the cut end of a very large Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) in a local sports park.
These change from a plasmodium state to the final sporulating state in about 3 days. By the time they are producing spore they are almost black. Thanks arlanda for ID - these were also named Comatricha nigra microspora

Fascinating!
Ok - pics added from 4 days later. I suspect 4 days gap was too much and I missed the real action. These look 'younger' fruiting bodies to me (not as red). I must try to check again tomorrow. Thanks for the ID suggestion Angel - it looks a good choice. Stay tuned again...
I will, Mark. I bet for Comatricha nigra!
I love that "cliffhanger"! Cant wait to see the dull version !! :)
Already done arlanda.. :) not much change in 2 days - just a bit duller and darker. Next call in 24 hours. I would have thought these would be faster. Stay tuned.
You must go back to the same place and record them when mature. Make sure you remember the exact place.
Thanks arlanda, Seema, Leanne, Reza. The pins didn't cost much but it was fiddly to sort them into colours :-)
Nice spotting!
nice gradient of colors....
Wow!
Lovely !
Thanks Jason. Lucky timing with these.
Amazing color!
