birds nest fungus (probably Cyathus stercoreus)

Description:

tiny cone shaped "nests" yellow brown on the outer surface, about 3/8 in. tall. The "nests" contain 3 to 4 "eggs" black, ovoid forms nestled at the bottom. The immature "nest" is covered by a white membrane. Older nests turn more dull gray.

Habitat:

on mulch and wood chips in a well tended garden near tennis courts.
