Black Witch Moth

Description:

This was a fun find! The Black Witch Moth is seen often at lights, but this time I found it out in the wild while hiking with a flashlight. It is an especially beautiful female with a wingspan of almost 16 cm. The Black Witch is one of the largest moths in the northern hemisphere. Family Erebidae (Noctuidae).

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, Km 18.5, 1164 meters.
