Northern Hawk Owl

Surnia ulula

Description:

It moved three times while I observed it, always to the top of another very tall tree before finally flying away. While I only saw one owl, my friend saw two at this location the previous day. This species is listed as rare on my Kodiak bird list from the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Habitat:

At the edge of a wet prairie, perching on the tallest trees.
