Florida leaf-footed bug

Acanthocephala femorata

Description:

Antennae uniformly colored, dull reddish or orangish; flange on hind tibia gently tapering distally; male hind femur greatly swollen and bearing a large spike; female hind femur slender and bearing several small spikes. 25-28 mm

Habitat:

In the garden of Topotepui, Venezuela.

Notes:

One of my 4 year old students spotted this bug on the Bromelia in the garden of Topotepui during a field trip. We were all amazed by it's size, and the fingerprint-like end of its shield.
