fritillary

Speyeria

Description:

Bright orange with dark brown or black markings. About 2" - 3" wing span.

Notes:

Saw this beauty feeding on a Pussypaw plant in Sequoia National Park. One of the more common butterflies seen in the park, as I was told on a butterfly info card.

There are so many Speyeria species in the Sierras. It is really difficult to identify to species unless you have a specimen. This one is probably Speyeria due to its size, but there is another Genus, Boloria (the lesser fritillaries) that are very similar.
