A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Tyto alba pratincola
Medium-sized owl with white, heart-shaped facial disk, no ear tufts, and long legs. Upper-parts are buff with fine white spots. Underparts are white with small black spots.
Open range. Rarely in deep forest. Introduced to Hawaii in 1958.
This owl was deeply sleeping on the edge of the Kapa'Ele'Ele forest, and just over the trail. We managed to get quite close before it noticed us. After starring at us few seconds, it decided to find another spot to sleep quietly.
