Bloody Brittlegill

Description:

Grow in small group of a dozen mushrooms. Caps are red, 4 to 10cm in diameter, convex at first, becoming flat and often with slightly depressed centres. Gills are white to cream, adnates, not particularly narrow and forking. Stem is rather short, not more than 10cm tall, about 2cm in diameter, and flushed wine-red. No particular smell, smelled very mushroomy...

Habitat:

Found on forest floor in coniferous forest of Jura mountains.

Notes:

At first, I thought this could be Crab brittlegill... but in the end, I rulled it out since I couldn't smell any crab-smell... it smelled really only mushroomy, just like any mushroom stall in the market. However, it is said that red and purple brittlegills would be particularly difficult to identify; but that specimens of Russula sanguinaria are an exception, since their red-flushed stems are quite distinctive.
