American Toad

Anaxyrus americanus

Description:

This is a medium-sized toad about 5–9 cm (2.0–3.5 in) in length. Color is variable on its rough skin, but the coloring in the photo is representative. They can change color somewhat depending upon temperature and humidity. Their call is a high trill lasting for several seconds.

Habitat:

I find these toads in my yard and in the woods behind the house. They breed in ponds, but are largely terrestrial the rest of the summer and fall.
