Description:

The wings are transparent, with a span of 5.6 to 6.1 cm. The opaque borders of its wings are dark brown, sometimes tinted with red or orange, and its body is dark in color. Caterpillars and adults feed on specific plants which makes them toxic for predators.

Butterfly Garden, Monteverde. For distribution see: http://darnis.inbio.ac.cr/ubis/FMPro?-DB...

Notes:

I have seen them in the wild in La fortuna.

Hi Gilma, thanks and sorry I did not meet you this time but I am sure I will return so... :-)
As for the glass wings, these were at the butterfly garden in Monteverde so if you go visit you will see them. In the wild I also saw them in different places: Arenal. I think I may have some pictures that I will show later on :-)

@KarenL: thanks for the "fun fact"! :-)

So happy you enjoy my little (Big) Country, if you come back, send me an Email so I can meet you... : )
I am so jealous of your spotting, I have spotted all sort of Glass Wings but not a single Greta morgane oto.... : (

Fun fact! The Spanish name for the glasswinged butterflies is ‘espejitos’, which literally translates to ‘little mirrors.’ Glasswinged butterflies lack the tiny scales that cover the wing membranes of most butterfly species and which give monarchs their distinctive orange and black pattern and morpho butterflies their vivid blue coloring. Instead, glasswinged butterflies have translucent membranes between the veins of their wings – enabling you to see straight through them! https://upload.facebook.com/projectnoah/...

I found very few trustable information about Greta nero:
http://www.cs.umb.edu/~whaber/Monte/Itho...
And I am wondering why BOA does not have it mentioned. Yours is Greta morgane oto, if you look at the tip of the forewing. The whole "bow" is dark not only the margin as shown in Nero.

@bayucca: I am actually not sure yet whether it is Greta morgane oto or nero. Could you tell them apart? (Thanks! :-)
