Polyphemus moth

Antheraea polyphemus

Description:

Large moth with 6" wing span, notable for large, purplish eyespots on its two hind wings.

Habitat:

Widely distributed across North America, this moth lives in woodlands. This spotting was on the deck of our cottage on Salt Spring Island which has douglas fir, arbutus and big-leaf maple on the property.
