I'd like to invite everybody to help Projeto Gaiola Aberta (Open Jail Project). They care and set free birds and other animals back to nature. These came from IBAMA (Brazilian Institute for Nature) taken from criminals. Every year I buy t-shirts with them. Antonio, the owner, is a extremely sensible man. http://www.projetogaiolaaberta.com.br/

Would be very nice to have a discussion thread.
Just an answer!

Your right, for shure, can you imagine how excited a criminal would feel finding a picture with GPS position of a rare specie? How many thousand dolars he could get capturing it? Probaly new species will be found here at PN. And I hope than can survive...

It may be possible for Project Noah to gather a list with all species that are some way attractive to criminals. For these spottings, they might turn off the GPS location?

Maybe Project Noah needs a discussion thread so that important topics like this can be debated without having to hijack spottings? Just a thought!

JuanDiTrani,
If you had readed till the end the five messages I sent, you would see that they are diferent.
I do what I can for nature, for example, I created a community named Project Noah at Orkut (the Brazilian Facebook), and estimulated people join in PN over than 100 comunities of Orkut!!!
I use to colect seeds (even crossing through bushes rsrsrs) and I make reforesting areas nearby, and of course I have made expeditions nearby taking pictures of species to put at PN. I have more than 100 pictures I haven't sent because I identified this problem of not giving a way to us to really protect nature from criminals.

As I said, Gustavo - as for my person, we are definetely fighting shoulder on shoulder. But if we want to reach out for going WITH governments, we need their attention and their WILL. Last you will not even touch if you start with confrontative attitude. This is the best way to block your way.
So we need to find a way to establish the good goals you stand for - but this way is not the direct, confrontative.
We are open for any aid in finding and building these ways. You're still welcome.

The best birdwatching website of Brasil estimulates everyone to denounce:
http://www.wikiaves.com.br/doku.php?lang...
I believe we can not have eyes only for our nice pictures and patches, we have to at least call the authorities if we see inocent creatures been captured to be seled and have leak of care, most of them die in few days because of psicological and nutrition suffering.
I saw a few guys stealing the sons of this owl and I heard her screams of pain

While we're confortable at our houses, many are suffering!

I think you made your point several messages ago and we clearly understand and will try to do somthing about it. I just think it´s not necessary to send the same message over and over. Maybe you could help more to nature consevation doing something in your community rather than critizing.

JuanDiTrani,
By now, the GPS position we're offering gives chance to everyone (destroyers and preservacionists), this war is open. To solve this problem, I sugest that we indicate the region a specie is, but not with the acuracy of a GPS. If a conservacionist needs, the member can verify if he is a real conservacionist and give the GPS position or even guide him to the place he spotted! That's protecting nature!

As for the first part, yes.
As for the second (public addresses of authorities and such),
not everytime the "right" way is the "right" way.
PNs primary concern is to raise awareness about nature wildlife spottings. Which means basicly starting to work at the basis right from the scratch, so to call. This is more about education than a direct fight - in my point of view.
In order not to twist the public image of PN, it wouldn't be the best idea to go "radical" steps like these. And "radical" measures itself with the habits of the common user. Aiming directly on authorities or their policies just creates a "hostile" atmosphere in a room where diplomacy should reign.
But thanks again for making your point clear.

Hi Gustavo, at the same time in some cases we could be revealing position information to poarchers, we are helping scientists, nature conservationist, law makers and other people involved on nature preservation

LarsKorb,
I answer that comment, thanks.
I really hope we compensate the using of tecnology to reveal exact position of species with the same engagement in denoucing criminals. In my opinion, PN had to create that channel, a link to enviromental authorities of each country, offering a special patch to those who colaborate. People have to have authorities phone numbers and e-mail at their iphones...

Gustavo,
please read my comment of one of your previous comments.
We do understand your point and we are discussiong the issue as we speak.
Since we have to deal with many (also technical) aspects, sollutions are unfortunately not that rapidly made as you understandingly wish to.
We are working on it - promised.
But please take distance from "spamming" reminders in the future, now that we replied officially to you.
Thanks for your understanding and happy spotting.

Hi KarenL,
A month ago I sent a message to Yasser talking about this, he answer me showing that understand my point of view and would be pleased to do something about. So I sent 2 new messages, 17 days ago, giving many sugestions but i had no answer...

KarenL
KarenL 12 years ago

Gustavo, you have a valid concern so why don't you send Yasser an email expressing your concerns via the contact link at the bottom of the page. Alternately you can email support@projectnoah.org - either way you will be communicating directly with the leaders of Project Noah without having to post onto unrelated spottings.

Hi Yasser!
What are you going to do to help the species (mainly the endemic or in extintion) we are revealing the exact position??? The hunters are "in love" with Project Noah too!!! What about create a denounce secction, offering cute Patches? We have to be responsible for what we're doing, their lives worth much more than cute patches... Many species can not run away...
