Red-Shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

Mottled dark brown and tan feathers, paler abdomen, striped tail feathers.

Habitat:

Sitting atop the electric pole in my back yard.

Notes:

There was a squirrel on the pole just below. I believe this young bird had intentions of nabbing it, that is, until I rounded the corner of the house and was spotted. It quickly flew away and the squirrel remained motionless for several minutes. There have been several individuals calling back and forth in my area. I have been attempting to photograph them for weeks. I have been told this photo is of a juvenile. Perhaps the calls are siblings and parents calling.
