A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Bristletail. 20 mm long including the antenna and long appendages at the rear. As near as I can determine, it is in the family Machilidae. Mostly gray body with lateral stripes that are a darker color. Between the lateral stripes, covering most of the back is a brownish red stripe, nearly matching the color of the rock it is on. Very large maxillary palps.
Found on a pinkish rock, nearly covered with a wide variety of lichen. Several were seen scurrying over the surface.
Found by Austin, he kept an eye on it while I returned to the car for my camera. This was on the Panorama trail on Flagstaff Mountain overlooking Boulder, Colorado.
