Oak Eggar caterpillar

Description:

This caterpillar has tan hairs, black stripes and white markings. This species can hibernate as a caterpillar. The larvae feed on Larix, Betula, Salix and Rubus species.

Habitat:

Small shrubbery near conifer forest, alt. ~1350 m

Notes:

The moth is known in French as minime à bandes haunes ou bombyx du chêne. It flies from May to September depending on the region. Their hairs can cause a violent itching reaction.
