Originally brought to the U.S. in the early 1900's to fight a blight in common pears, Bradford pears have become an extremely popular landscaping choice, despite a fairly short life-span and weak branches. Blooms on bare branches, showy flowers have a strong, acrid smell. Makes a small, woody fruit eaten by birds.
Native to Asia, invasive in the Eastern U.S.

Thanks, Hema ... there have been so many Callery-Bradford pear spottings lately, I decided to go find mine, too. Probably too many of them around, but they are such a nice pop of energy in spring, one of the first things to bloom.
