Weevil

Description:

Really cool little weevil of 8 mm in length. It is one of the broad-nosed weevils (short beak). It has greatly enlarged front legs with thicker femora, longer tibiae and longer tarsi with large claws. This may be for climbing around on branches? On a flat surface, the weevil is kind of clumsy. The mandibles are disproportionate, the right mandible is long and heavy, while the left mandible is short and thin (in the last picture, you can see the heavy right mandible hanging down). I have seen this in other weevils. It is covered in both short hairs and scales, which are round and flat and set out in rows like sequins. Many are metallic (see the 4th picture). Family Curculionidae, Subfamily Entiminae, Tribe Tanymecini.

Habitat:

Found at night on a broad leaf (3rd picture), semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico 2,200 meters.
