Amazonian catfish

Description:

This species of catfish was approximately 7-8 inches in length from head (not including its whiskers) to the end of its tail fin. Although my excellent fishing guide, Raul from ACTS and Explorama, advised as to its poisonous dorsal barb, I managed to get stung when removing the hook. My only excuse is that we were fishing in a torrential downpour. The sting lasted for about fifteen minutes and was the strength of a single sting from most wasps found in the Southeastern U.S. There were no after effects.

Notes:

The referenced article notes that there are nearly 1,300 species of catfish in the Amazon basin. The only reference made by my guide was that this was a "poisonous catfish."
