Lybius vieilloti
Vieillot's Barbet is a small, sparrow sized barbet with large head and beak, easily recognizable red face and crown, white to white-yellow and red-spotted underparts. The upperparts are dark-brown, or blackish, with the exception of white-yellow rump.
African species, occurring in Sahel belt, from Senegal to Sudan, in dry woodlands and scrublands. Here observed in urban area, seen in N'Djamena center.
For my 500th spotting and my 200th bird spotting on Project NOAH, I've chosen this species, who was, at the time of sighting, a lifer for me... and remains the only spotting of this species up to now. It was also a first time I used a photo technique I developed through my wanderings, that give to shots that foggy and unearthly aspect... ... ... ;-) This is all nonsense, of course - I had to shot quickly through mosquito nets on windows... I saw this beauty in branches of neighboring tree, and knew that I would lose a shot if I tried to open and make noise. Well, whatever, the result was above my expectations, a bit foggy, but not that bad in the end... And by the way, I believe it is also the first spotting of this species on Project NOAH...
