Brown Water Scorpion

Ranatra fusca

Description:

I am a little unsure if I have identified the correct species. It seems a bit darkly colored for Rantra fusca. Any input is appreciated This bug was approximately 6 inches long. The long, slender tail-like apparatus is actually a breathing tube. I found this one swimming and removed him from the water for a photo shoot and put him back where I found him. I am a little shaky on the exact species. It seems a bit darkly colored for Rantra fusca.

Habitat:

Man-made lake. Pyamtuning Lake, Andover OH, Ashtabula County, USA.
