American alligator

Alligator mississippiensis

Description:

An endemic species to the southeast United States. The American alligator can be identified (other than being the only crocodilian in its range) by its broad snout and close set eyes. This aquatic reptile can reach a length of 15 ft or 5.6 meters and weigh up to 1,000 lb (453 kg). The one in the picture is a juvenile about 1.1 ft long.

Habitat:

Found on the side of a dirt road. As I got closer it slipped into a small puddle where it stayed allowing me to get some close-ups.
