Pluvialis apricaria
The European Golden Plover shows here its beautiful breeding plumage, with spotted gold and black on the crown, back and wings. The breeding period for these birds in Iceland is June-August.
Moorland on mountainside with heather surrounded by small bush, near the coast. At Lónsöræfi, a wilderness area in south-east Iceland. Last shot is of the habitat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%B3ns%C...
This pair of European Golden Plovers made themselves heard loudly and repeatedly with a plaintive whistle when we hiked close to their breeding territory. These shy and wary birds nest in heather or grass. After a few distant shots we went around and followed our way.

Fantastic! In Winter plummage they are much less appealing, I have to say.

Thanks Marta! Aren't these so pretty?! We heard those well before we could see them: they had spotted us first! And clearly didn't want us nearby.
