Police Car Moth

Gnophaelia vermiculata

Description:

Sporting bold black and white wings, and bright orange spots on the frontal thorax, this moth is said to resemble an old fashioned police car. It has a delicate build, which isn't immediately apparent in pictures. This moth is a weak flyers, and can easily be mistaken for a butterfly while in flight. Upon landing, its "delta formation" wing configuration and its antennae give it away.

Notes:

These moths were spotted along the Turkey Flats Trail near Glade Park, CO. Sunday August 11th, 2013 at approximately 12:30pm.
