Taeniopygia bichenovii
A very active little finch with a white face and dark eyes defined by black lines giving it an "owl-like" look. Two thin black lines were seen across the breast. Face was white and the rest of the body a pale grey with the abdomen, a creamy colour. Wing feathers were speckled. An oval-shaped nest of grass could be seen on the acacia nearby. It had an opening on the side and the birds could be seen darting in and out of this entrance.
Spotted in open farmland. Distribution: http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Taeniopygi...
These finches had a nest on a prickly acacia tree opposite the pepper-corn tree on which they were resting. They were extremely busy flitting from the nest to the grasslands beyond. Bird calls were very sweet and almost entreating ! Also called Double-barred finch Spotted alongside Zebra Finch, Wagtails and Superb Wrens.
Thanks for your comment Kerry. My field guide says the same as yours -Poephila sp (1986). But other sources (current) state they go by either generic name.
Such a sweet little bird! Do you have the scientific name right Leuba? My Field Guide says different to you.
