A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Larus smithsonianus
Hundreds of adult herring gulls were in the air at once, startled from the rocks by another photographer. Juveniles were seen hiding among the rocks - nearly adult sized but still unable to fly.
The gulls were spotted on Mt Desert Rock, a treeless island with a lighthouse where numerous seabirds feed and breed. The island is managed by College of the Atlantic, and students were seen taking blood samples from juvenile herring gulls as part of a mercury study.
