Sitka Black-tailed Deer

Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis

Description:

Two newborns and their mother. We slowed down to let them cross the street, but one was curious and came up to sniff our tire. The mother was very freaked out and ran towards the trees. One of the fawns followed her, but the other remained curious. She looked like she might leave it, but I scared the newborn off with some clapping and they all went into the woods together.

Habitat:

On the side of a rural road with very little traffic. It is common to see several deer on this drive.

Thanks Hema. I don't think you have the same subspecies in California if I'm not mistaken. Probably a different subspecies of mule deer.
