Lineated Barbet

Megalaima lineata

Description:

Common frugivorous bird in the area.

Habitat:

Wooded urban areas, roadside trees, parks and gardens.

Notes:

Green bird with orangish beak, white streaks on pale brown head, neck, mantle and breast. It has a small yellow eye patch, which is less conspicuous and yellowish legs. The beak is surrounded by black bristles that are visible. Its loud calls are familiar in the area, more during the fruiting season. Although a frugivorous bird, it also feeds on insects, nectar and small vertibrates like lizards. Found this young one looking lost in the yard and hopping around the wet soil under the bushes and flower pots. With the temperatures soaring to 45°C in these parts of Northern India, it is likely to find dehydrated birds and animals around.
