Elegant Sheep Moth (caterpillar)

Description:

Approximately 3" in length. Body, dark in color, appears hairless. Patterns of branched yellow to orange spines encircle the body segments. The head is orange-brown.

Habitat:

Alpine meadows, widely distributed in western North America from Southern California to southern Canada. This particular spotting was from the Ptarmigan Trail in the Many Glacier area of Glacier National Park, Montana, USA.

Notes:

This caterpillar possesses stinging spines.
