White-tailed Deer

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

These fawns were about 18 inches tall.

Habitat:

Spotted behind a building that borders woods/wetlands.

Notes:

The mother of these 2 fawns was accidently scared off by a worker filling propane tanks. They look very young. I took some pictures and, a short time later, a video. The fawn lying down in the photos and video was having trouble bearing it's own weight. I think it hurt one of it forelegs. They seemed distressed without their mother. Hopefully she will return soon.

I can't be sure the doe came back. The healthy fawn was gone in the morning. It certainly could have just wandered off. It didn't seem to want to wander much though. It was there for at least 8-10 hours. Maybe I'd just like to think it got reunited with the mother. :)

Looks like mom came back? They gain strength as the days go by.

Thank you for the kind words staccyh. It was sad, but as you said, that's nature. I'm actually glad that when the spot was checked the next day we sent have to make a tough decision.

Unfortunately this spotting doesn't have a completely happy ending. We checked this morning and it seems that the doe came back and had to continue without the lame fawn. We found it this morning, it didn't survive the night. :(
