Saw scaled Viper

Echis carinatus

Description:

Alerted by hissing sound.

Habitat:

This is near the highest peak in the Aravalli mountains of Rajasthan. Relatively dry - just on the edge of the Thar desert.

Notes:

Among the visitors at the observatory in last April was this snake which managed to fall into the dried up rain water collecting tank. We were alerted to its presence by a hissing sound. We could get it to enter a long pipe and then left the pipe to one side from where it seemed to have moved out. It would not have been able to move out of the tank otherwise..
