White-bellied spider monkey

Ateles belzebuth

Notes:

This image was taken on my visit with those in our group, the 2013 Educator Academy, to La Isla de los Monos - Monkey Island, in the upper reaches of the Peruvian Amazon. This sanctuary is located a couple hours by boat north of Iquitos. While visiting, this monkey hopped into the lap of one of the co-leaders of our group who was sitting on a bench; and, with no prompting whatsoever from the lady, the monkey proceeded to wrap its hands around the lens of her camera and appeared to take a peek through the viewfinder. I guess that everyone these days wants to be a photographer! To reduce the background distractions and colors, I replaced some areas in the image with green via Photoshop color fill. Otherwise, the image is 100% natural behavior by the monkey for that instant!

Amazing snap and lovely story. It's awesome, how monkeys behave, sometimes they act just like humans. Really cool!
