Spotting

Description:

a type of walking stick, about 5", see third photo for scale

Habitat:

tropical rainforest

Notes:

I spotted this in Rio Claro reserve. I was hiking the only trail along the river that led deeper into the reserve. It was very rugged with a lot of sharp limestone and didn't have as much diversity or the numbers of insects I've seen in other tropical rain forests but this stick bug was really cool to spot. It was on a shrub just off the trail, which was very thin. I nearly walked past it, but it caught my eye and he was busted! It didn't really try to get away and was pretty relaxed.

Thanks Gilma. It is well camouflaged, it even has little thorns along its body. It's probably better not to touch the bugs anyway. Me, I can't resist, especially if the insect is really relaxed and cooperative. After I had this walking stick on my hand for a bit, I put my hand up to my head and he walked on my head. It is a strange sensation having a big insect like that on your head and face. It's a thrill I've come to love!

Nice spotting, it is very long and does not look like the common walking sticks I have seen... very very camouflaged!!
P.S.: I love Bugs but I could never, never get enough nerves to touch them.. : o

That's too bad. Maybe they are just being better camouflaged?

Exactly what they are commonly called stick bugs - haven't seen one of those since I was a kid - seems they have disappeared from my area - sad
