A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Larus atricilla
Common and conspicuous, especially on sandy beaches; the most frequently seen gull along southern Atlantic and Gulf coast beaches. An avid taker of handouts; may gather in large numbers at parks and parking lots where food is offered. Relatively small ( although largest of the dark-hooded gulls) and slender, with long wings and long drooping bill. Note dark gray upperside blending onto black wingtips. Voice: Clear, nasal, bugling calls: commonly a short kiiwa. Long call has laughing cadence. The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America by David Allen Sibley (2003)
