Regal Moth

Citheronia regalis 7706

Description:

Huge grey silk moth with brilliant rust red bands vertically striped down the veins of the wings, with contrasting white patches in between across the lower third of wings. Thorax has bold stripes.

Habitat:

Spotted on a sheet hanging on my porch with black lights and halogens shining on it at night to attract moths. We live in a gated lake community surrounded by rural agricultural land, and some wooded areas. National Moth Week 2017.

Notes:

This is a lifer for me! I've never seen one prior to now. Edited this spotting when a second one showed up! Handled with the utmost care, I would never want to damage such a beauty.
