Lunaria annua
It is an annual or biennial growing to 90 cm (35 in) tall by 30 cm (12 in) broad, with large, coarse, pointed oval leaves with marked serrations (pic3). The leaves are hairy, the lower ones long-stalked, the upper ones stalkless. Violet flowers with four petals.
Spotted at the edge of a wooded area at Discovery Park. Native to the Balkans and southwest Asia and naturalized throughout the temperate world.
In the fall and winter the plant reveals seed pods that look like silver coins which are often used in floral arrangements.
