Grizzlies tend a to have a much larger had to body ratio, a very pronounced back hump, a squarish muzzle, significantly longer forelimbs, and coarse fur with a silverish shine to it especially in the facial area hence the name "grizzly".

Black bears don't have the pronounced hump along with a smaller head and the pointier snout along with more pronounced ears and a more uniform pelage. They also come in many different colors such as brown, white, cinnamon and gray as well as the black that gives it its name...

All in all, you be the judge, but if you ask me, your guide was misguided...
