Thorn Treehopper

Umbonia sp.

Description:

These are small insects, no more than 1 cm long. They mimic the spines in the stems of certain plants. This way they protect themselves from predators. There seems to be three similar species in Costa Rica: U. ataliba, U. crassicornis, and U.spinosa. I cannot tell apart which ones are these in the spotting.

Habitat:

Forested area. Paraiso Quetzal. San Gerardo de Dota/Cerro de la Muerte.
