Yellow Tang

Zebrasoma flavescens

Description:

Except for a white tail spine these fish beauties are entirely yellow. These fish browse singly, in small groups often including other surgeonfish species.

Habitat:

Shallow sea water, this one from the familie of surgeonfishes prefers the calmer waters.

Notes:

The color of this fish is so intense we were able to spot them from a hill maybe 30 feet high. This fish is only abundant in Hawaii and/or aquariums. It can also be seen in Japan and Guam but not in as large number.

I loved snorkeling in Hawaii, I feel like my vacations there were too short.

Hi Erik! I am very glad you like the spotting!

This particular spotting was very random, un-planned, and special. We went into a 2 mile hike south of Kiholo Bay in order to get to the black sand beach, Lauhinewai. During the hike we are climbing over some rock and I noticed this Yellow patches on the water. Immediately, I rushed over, jumped in the water, and I probably saw probably more that 50 of this fish.
They were group together in 5 groups all ranging from 10 to 20 fish in it.

What a great spotting! Over were I am at, on Oahu, I have never seen more than three together and they are so skittish, it's hard to get a good picture.
