Sawfly

Sphacophilus sp.

Description:

Mostly black with an orange thorax. Forked antennae

Habitat:

Withlacoochee State Forest Citrus Tract on Feay's Prairieclover (Dalea feayi)

Notes:

Very odd little sawfly. Bugguide has had a hard time placing this because the forked antennae in combination with the other body features don't seem to be a great match for anything in the guide.

I'm not sure of the suggestion above having done a little more research. It may be a Arge sp. instead. The forked antennae occur on the male of some species. I don't see any with forked antennae in bugguide or google searches. I think bugguide would be very interested in adding this photo and I'm sure they can provide an accurate ID. Please consider posting it there.
