Sckel: salamander and newt are different creatures? A newt is a small amphibian with lungs and a strong tail and a pointed head that spends the majority of its adult life on land and returns to water to breed. Salamander short rounded head long tail the majority have 4 toes on the front and 5 on the back must stay near water to maintain moisture. Axolotl is type of salamander that the larvae do not undergo metamorphosis so the adults stay totally aquatic and keep the gills
