22 Spot Ladybird

Description:

This ladybug always has 22 spots, which rarely join up. It is very small, 3 to 5 mm.

Habitat:

Shrubs in a mix of temporary wetland and forest.

Notes:

The ladybugs bright colors can be seen as a warning signal. The beetles can namely secrete a yellow liquid from the leg joints, a liquid which in addition to being toxic also has a strikingly bitter taste. Some predatory insects and birds eat nevertheless ladybugs. This specimen can only be found in Europe.
