Longfin Batfish/Spadefish

Platax teira

Description:

Silver; dark to faint bar through eye and a second bar from front of dorsal fin to ventral fin, large dark blotch above rear edge of ventral fin. Usually form groups inshore and outer reefs.

Habitat:

Tropical reefs from shallows up to 40 meters.

Notes:

Usually, they tend to form Groups. Occasionally, they can be seen getting cleaned by Cleaner Wrasse as shown in Pic #1. The Cleaner Wrasses will darts into the small mouth and also the gills to find the parasites. In Sipadan Island, Malaysia, Green Turtles are in abundance and I can find this strange behavior of the Batfish following the Turtles around and each time the Turtle poo, the Batfish will quickly feed on them! Yup, feeding on the poo of Turtles!
