Burrowing Bug

Description:

A relatively large Burrowing Bug, about 1 cm long. Family Cydnidae. Surprisingly little is known about the biology of Burrowing Bugs. They have piercing sucking mouthparts and probably feed on roots. They are fossorial, digging into the ground with enlarged front tibiae. This one has long orange hairs on the legs and underside of the body (last picture). They can disappear in less than 3 seconds.

Habitat:

Burrowing into the red sand along the Rim Trail. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah.
